We're not here to take away the challenge, which is, of course, a part of the fun in any Dark Souls game. The goal of this document is to help you learn Dark Souls 3's language, so the sooner you pick it up, the better.
We're here to explain classes, tie-breaking, new systems, leveling, and other topics, including how we created the best character in a Dark Souls game( and you can do the same) for you.
Dark Souls 3 divides its characters into classes, just like so many other role-playing games. Veterans of Dark Souls will recognize many of the character classes, but a few brand-new ones have appeared on the screen.
The points that are pre-poured into each of the starting classes' various attributes are the biggest differences between them, regardless of your choice. Even the equipment you start with merely confirms those statistics.
Since you need a lot of Intelligence to cast spells, it makes sense that sorcerers, for instance, have many points assigned to it. If you plan to swing around heavy weapons while wearing thick armor, you'd want knights because they have more strength than anything else despite their relatively low intelligence. On the other hand, a thief possesses great dexterity and vigor, making him ideal for swinging tiny, light weapons. To view the starting classes and their statistics, view a gallery of them below.
In general, you might want to engage in close combat or a combination of the two.
Choose a Knight if you like to fight. Choose a Sorcerer if you prefer to engage in close combat. The Pryomancer is a good option if you want to strike the right balance between the two. A thief is the one for you if you want to move quickly, entering and exiting dangerous fights. Choose Deprived if you're willing to take on an even greater challenge but want to develop your character specifically.
By creating a non-traditional Sorcerer early on in the game, you can greatly advantage. We'll discuss it below and it's something we advise. You can also view the starting statistics solely numerically for the time being.
You've decided on your class, all right. What now?
As you can assign points at will to almost a dozen attributes, each character levels up and gets stronger.
As in all Souls games, leveling up is effective. You'll receive souls, a currency that is used all over the world. To level up, buy armor, or buy fire bombs, you can just as easily spend souls. It's up to you, but you should focus on leveling up early on.
With one notable exception, the majority of classes begin at level 8. The Deprived class begins with a subpar weapon, shield, and lack of any sort of armor. But there's a good reason to be deprived: You start at level 1 and every stat is set at 10. You're in for a difficult start with Rise Deprived, but once you get past that, you can buy the game's lowest levels to effectively create your own class. Playing an assassin, who needs to earn enough souls to start leveling from 10 to 11, is much more expensive than climbing from level 2 to 3. You also have good starting points for everything in case you decide to change your mind.
You are now prepared to level up as you speak with the Fire Keeper. When leveling in the early game, there is a straightforward rule you can follow: look at your character's starting stats and assign your first levels to the attributes with the highest numbers.
Play to your class's strengths, in other words. Lean into your class if you've selected one other than Deprived. You should take advantage of the chance to level up early and frequently because your character's stats will reveal their strengths. Pour points into intelligence if you're a sorcerer. Intelligence and faith are your friends if you're a Pryomancer. Making a knight stronger is impossible to do wrong.
The point is that you'll need all the assistance you can get during Dark Souls 3's early hours. Accentuate the skills that your class already excels at to increase competency.
What happens if there are two attributes you can't choose from? Use your weapons to cut the tie.
When you level up specific attributes in Dark Souls 3, each weapon gains more power. The weapon's attribute bonus is this. You now know what to level up if you discover that your weapon of choice enjoys particular characteristics.
The Estoc, the Assassin class's starting weapon, is depicted in the image above. Strength, the strong arm icon, and Dexterity( the hand icon), two attribute bonuses, are present. But hold on! Two statistics exist! What distinguishes them from one another? Choose Dexterity. At 12, it has a higher base requirement than Strength does at 10.
Feel free to bend and violate the previous rule as you see fit in Dark Souls 3 because it contains a lot of curveballs.
For instance, you will receive the Master's samurai sword if you manage to kill him in Firelink Shrine. It's a fantastic tool that is definitely worth investing all of your souls in learning how to use it.
Despite being notoriously challenging, Dark Souls games are frequently fair. Even though they occasionally seem cheap, the things you can do to your enemy are frequently the same as what they can to you. But you have a special human advantage over your adversaries: most of the time, you can predict what they'll do with your meaty brain.
Despite how challenging Dark Souls 3 is, you rarely lack foresight. You can confidently attack and defend if you take your time and pay close attention to what your enemies are doing and have just done.
In fact, I've considered Souls games to be rhythmic for a very long time. I am aware of this. Listen to me. Your job in Guitar Hero and Rock Band is to act morally at the appropriate time, even if that means slightly simplifying the situation. You can be listening for repeatable patterns, watching what is happening right now, contemplating what just happened, and looking up the note highway to see what will happen next at any given time.
Dark Souls 3 enemies are not all that dissimilar from that. Every time they attack, they telegraph their movements. You'll succeed if you learn the patterns.
If you pay close attention to enemy animations, you'll soon realize, for instance, that you can strike while an adversary is aiming for a hit. You should prepare your response in accordance with what your enemies have told you.
To put it another way, I've frequently referred to Souls combat as "the dance," implying that there is a set strategy for dealing with foes. It wo not be difficult to imagine Dark Souls 3 as a rhythm game if you consider encounters to be dance steps.
This way of viewing the game also has the implication that repetition can lead to success. The same strategy will almost always produce the same outcomes if used against similar enemies in similar locations. Although there is always some variation and things can go awry, it will be extremely beneficial to maintain composure and keep an eye on what is about to happen.
This is especially useful in boss fights where it can mean the difference between success and failure if you can maintain composure and spot patterns. That's simple to say, of course, when you're not being attacked by a huge undead monster brandishing an armored halberd that is 20 feet long. However, bosses typically only have a few options, so if you pay attention, you can anticipate what will happen next and roll, block, or flee as necessary. With that information at your disposal, you can anticipate your response times.
Prior Dark Souls games distinguished between different states of being using the idea of humanity. Going hollow and appearing like a zombie meant losing your humanity. You received some benefits from using a consumable Humanity item, such as an attractive facelift. In both Dark Souls 1 and 2, there was some variation on that.
Humanity is completely abandoned in Dark Souls 3. A brand-new but connected idea has taken its place. You are Unkindled when you start the game. It is in a reanimation state. After all, leaving your own grave is the first action you take in the game.
However, if you burn the consumable Ember item, you can become Kindled. It's like using Humanity in Dark Souls 3, and it significantly improves your overall health or HP gauge. A visual representation of your strong position, your clothes will also burn like the edges of a burning piece of paper.
Utilizing an Ember has many advantages, just like in earlier Dark Souls games. The ability to call on other players or non-playable characters for assistance is the most important of them. This is the ideal time to use an Ember because, as before, NPCs frequently congregate in the area just before a boss battle.
You become more open to invasion as a result. NPCs can intrude on your game as you play Unkindled, even if you're playing offline.
Embers are scarce, just like Humanity before it, but From Software appears to be much less frugal than it has in the past when it comes to such a crucial item. There are many of them if you explore the world of Dark Souls 3. At retailers in Firelink Shrine, you can also buy Embers at a variety of prices.
Never. Never a time. Never, ever, never. Your day can be ruined by even the smallest pack of rats.
Finding loops to run to farm souls and items in a Dark Souls game is one of the purest, strangest joys. Of course, farming is not unique to this series, but it pays off greatly because it allows you to level up, bank souls, and outwit your adversaries.
As long as you could survive and be carried to Firelink Shrine with your souls intact, farming in the first level of the original Dark Souls was a great experience. In both Dark Souls 2 and 3, that was not the case. Avoid wasting time trying to get levels in the Firelink Shrine or the Cemetery of Ash. In the vicinity of Firelink Shrine, the High Wall of Lothric, you can reach the second bonfire, Tower on the Wall, with a little more effort.
Just beneath the bonfire is a particularly challenging Lothric Knight, but your efforts could be greatly rewarded. The Lothric Knight Shield, which offers 100% physical damage reduction way, way earlier in the game than any other shield, has a slim but real chance of being dropped by him.
You can quickly figure out where to run to enrage the fire-breathing dragon on the bridge from the Tower on Wall bonfire. You'll earn souls for doing nothing useful as it breathes its flames and dispatches a large number of enemies.
The cycle is as follows: kill the foes, enrage the dragon, collect the rewards, take a break, and repeat the process until you have gained souls and leveled them up. Eventually, you will receive an amazing shield.
Which class should you choose now that you are familiar with leveling and the fundamentals of each subject?
If you're looking for an idea, we have one right here: Sorcerers and their spells have a significant early-game advantage, just like in the first Dark Souls.
The benefit of having ranged weapons cannot be overstated. They allow for the opening of entire universes. A class like a thief only engages in close quarters and dagger-huddling combat with an adversary you cannot sneak up on and backstab. If you're a sorcerer, you can start the battle from twelve yards away, and this is still true dozens of hours later.
Ranged weapons are not necessary, but having the ability to strike from a distance will greatly simplify your life when you first enter the game.
The Sorcerer class effectively combines an assassin and a thief— classes with light armor, light weapons, plenty of swings, rolling, and blocking dexterity, as well as the ability to throw magic.( Assassins start with a spell, but it's not offensive at all.) It is intended to silence you and approach adversaries covertly, much like an assassin.
You can handle fairly complex weapons well if you start out as a sorcerer. They are not particularly powerful, but that's okay because sorcerers have a lot of stamina, allowing you to use your sword repeatedly.
The Master can be killed remotely, which is the best aspect of being a sorcerer. That is the extremely challenging golden man who lurks outside Firelink Shrine and has the power to instantly dispatch some classes. He could certainly treat a sorcerer who approached close and intimately while wearing nothing more than robes in that way. However, if you have spells, you can keep your distance and obliterate him.
He will reward you with the Uchigatana, his katan. It takes only a few levels of the right stats to become your main weapon, even though sorcerers are not powerful enough to use it right away.
Is it any good? More than 75 hours into Dark Souls 3, it continues to be our main weapon.
