Let's be honest - Souls PvP has always been the series' weakest element. Those chaotic invasion moments where combat devolves into laggy backstab fishing or endless spell-spamming? They're tolerable in small doses as an optional diversion from the main single-player experience. But making this the core gameplay loop? That's a hard sell.
The Duskbloods appears to be building its entire identity around what many consider the least polished aspect of Souls games. The trailer shows:
Eight players crammed into gothic arenas
Mandatory PvP encounters with environmental threats
No confirmation of any substantial single-player content
FromSoftware's genius has always been in crafting methodical, atmospheric single-player experiences where every enemy encounter feels carefully choreographed. Throwing players into a monster-filled moshpit where you're just as likely to die to network latency as to actual skill? That sacrifices everything that makes these games special.

The platform choice raises additional red flags. Nintendo's online infrastructure has always lagged behind competitors, and FromSoftware's netcode is... let's say "quirky" at the best of times. The idea of:
Peer-to-peer connections for 8-player matches
Potential frame rate instability on Switch 2 hardware
The inevitable laggy backstabs and phantom hits
...fills me with dread. Miyazaki may promise "unique interactions" through the role system (like the "Destined Companion" mechanic), but will these nuanced systems survive contact with Nintendo's online services?
Part of my disappointment stems from what The Duskbloods almost was. That initial trailer perfectly captured the:
Gothic Victorian architecture
Cosmic horror undertones
Hunter-esque character designs
It's frustrating to see these elements wasted on what's essentially a Dark Souls battle royale rather than a proper spiritual successor to Bloodborne. The steampunk jetpacks and automatic firearms feel particularly jarring in this context.
I want to believe in FromSoftware. Their track record suggests they might yet pull off this multiplayer experiment. But between:
The focus on forced PvP
The Switch 2's online limitations
The abandonment of deep single-player storytelling
...I'm keeping my expectations firmly in check. Maybe The Duskbloods will surprise us all. But for now, I think I'll stick to solo journeys through Yharnam and the Lands Between.
